Global Ties Miami honored St. Thomas University with the Excellence in Academic Partnership Award. In announcing their decision to President David A. Armstrong J.D., they wrote: “From the undeniable impact of Dr. Roza Pati’s invaluable meetings with our Combating Human Trafficking delegations to the warmth you personally bring each time you welcome our international visitors, it is clear that STU embodies the expertise, professionalism, and warmth of U.S. citizens that we strive to showcase with each of our curated itineraries. These contributions not only enrich our programs but also demonstrate the deep commitment St. Thomas University has to global engagement and community impact.” Accepting the Award on behalf of St. Thomas University, at the Global Ties Awards Gala event in the historic Coral Gables Woman’s Club, Dr. Roza Pati, St. John Paul II Distinguished Professor of Law and Director of The John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy thanked Global Ties for being a bedrock in our community and for transforming Miami into a privileged place of profound human encounters, where God’s creation can gather to celebrate the blessings of an interconnected family.
In conversations with participants, Dr. Pati reaffirmed the University’s and the Academy’s mission to promote human dignity and build scholarly, compassionate, and just global alliances. Guided by its Catholic mission and strategic vision of Pursuing Excellence, the University seeks to form ethical, passionate, and justice-driven leaders equipped to transform the world. As Pope Francis teaches us in Evangelii Gaudium, education must inspire “a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, and to leave this earth somehow better than we found it.”
The Human Trafficking Academy has become a trusted academic and policy partner to national and international institutions, fostering dialogue and collaboration among governments, civil society, and academia. Through its research, capacity-building programs, and international exchanges with foreign delegations, including the U.S. Department of State’s Combating Human Trafficking International Visitor Leadership Program, the Academy continues to elevate global standards of education and advocacy in the fight against human trafficking, by training judges, prosecutors, attorneys, government officials, law enforcement officers, academics, and civil society.
Global Ties Miami is a nonprofit organization, part of the Global Ties U.S. network and has been serving the community since 1959, playing a crucial role in fostering international relationships, and striving to create a more peaceful, prosperous world by advancing international understanding, connections, and cultural exchange.
At the Gala event, held on October 9, 2025, Dr. Roza Pati was accompanied by Maribel Rodrigues Ferreira, Program Coordinator of the Academy. The elegant evening gathered supporters, dignitaries, and community leaders to honor the exemplary contributions to diplomacy, education, and cross-cultural engagement. The Awards Gala was a true celebration of international partnership and shared purpose to connect communities through culture, cooperation, and diplomacy.
For the Human Trafficking Academy, this honor stands as a profound affirmation of its enduring work to prevent trafficking among the most vulnerable, empower those on the front lines, protect and integrate victims, and promote meaningful survivor leadership. It is also a testament to the collective vision of St. Thomas University College of Law and its partners, who strive to end modern-day slavery and build a world grounded in human dignity and hope.
