Domestic Violence Awareness Day at STU College of Law

By October 16, 2025Featured, News

The John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy (HTA), in partnership with the Health & Wellness Center and Women in Distress, hosted Domestic Violence Awareness Day at the College of Law on October 15, 2025. The initiative advanced HTA’s mission to uphold human dignity and educate the campus community on the connection between domestic violence (DV) and human trafficking.

Throughout the day, the HTA team engaged students, faculty, and staff at information tables in the College of Law breezeway. Purple ribbons and informational flyers featuring key statistics and local resources were distributed. The outreach encouraged participants to recognize the signs of abuse, understand how coercive control can lead to trafficking, and connect with survivor-centered services.

At midday, attendees gathered in the Gus Machado Auditorium for a lecture titled “Love Shouldn’t Hurt: Understanding, Identifying, and Seeking Help,” presented by Katherine Hagood of Women in Distress. The presentation explored the dynamics of intimate partner violence, provided practical safety strategies, and highlighted the free, confidential support available to victims. The session drew strong participation and thoughtful discussion.

Domestic violence impacts individuals across all communities and often increases vulnerability to trafficking through isolation, manipulation, and economic control. Raising awareness, empowering bystanders, and improving access to support services are essential steps toward prevention and early intervention.

The Academy extends its sincere appreciation to all JD and LL.M. students, faculty, and staff who took part in this important initiative. Together, we continue to build a community grounded in the promotion of human dignity for all.
