Human Trafficking Academy Presents before the Consular Corps of Miami

On March 14, 2024, Director of the John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy, Dr. Roza Pati, St. John Paul II Distinguished Professor of Law, was featured as speaker and moderator in a panel on human trafficking law and practice before the Consular Corps of Miami, under the auspices of The Honorable Sylvia Cesaratto, Consul General of Canada. The panel discussed about the prevalence of human trafficking in Florida; the challenges of investigating local human trafficking that intersects various U.S. jurisdictions, as well as the importance of transnational joint investigations; the specific role that consular offices to better address human trafficking of foreign nationals in the US; trauma-informed prosecutions and their effectiveness; the converging and diverging issues in domestic violence and human trafficking; strategies for prevention and intervention to reduce the vulnerability of women and girls to human trafficking; available resources for victims and survivors; the importance of partnerships and building effective collaborations etc. Panelists included Deputy Commander and Criminal Investigator of the Human Trafficking Task Force for the Miami Dade State Attorney’s Office (SAO) Ms. Alexandra Martinez; Mr. Mike Joo, Special Deputy US Marshal with FBI Child Exploitation & Human Trafficking Task Force and Detective with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit; and Dr. Linda Parker, President and CEO of Women in Distress, Inc.
