A Shared Commitment to Awareness and Action: The John Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy Joins Community Partners in Awareness Event

On Sunday, April 12, 2026, the John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy at St. Thomas University College of Law had the privilege of participating, alongside community partners, in the “For Sale: Human Trafficking Awareness Event,” hosted by Declare No More Foundation and Safe Families for Children at Christchurch Miami.

The event brought together members of the community in a space of reflection, faith, and shared purpose. Through survivors’ stories, the program showcased the societal vulnerabilities that make victims susceptible to human trafficking at micro and macro levels.

The John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy, the pioneer institution in South Florida combatting human trafficking, is happy to have joined the organizers, as well as the leaders and pastors of the Christchurch Miami community, who created a welcoming environment for connection and collaboration. The Brunetti Academy shared information about its work and offerings side by side other community organizations such as Citrus Health Network, Glory House, The Mavuno Project, the Miami-Dade Sheriff Task Force, and Taking Back the Girls. Many attendees visited the Academy’s information table, creating opportunities for dialogue around education, awareness, and opportunities for growth of anti-trafficking work. Follow-up engagement will continue through the sharing of educational resources, research insights, and opportunities for continued involvement in awareness and prevention efforts.

A central message emerged throughout the evening: awareness must lead to action. By networking with survivors and many stakeholders, and by gaining a deeper understanding of the issue, participants were invited to consider how each person, in their own capacity, can contribute to the prevention of human trafficking and to the restoration of human dignity through informed and responsible engagement. The gathering became a reminder of the importance of collective effort.

Representing the John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy at the event were Administrative Assistant Doris Tobón, as well as Graduate Fellows Alicia Lee, Emine Tugce Kabaoglu, and Feliks Myrzabaev, who are LL.M. Intercultural Human Rights Candidates, 2026 at St. Thomas University College of Law. The event served as a reminder that human trafficking is a complex human rights challenge that calls for partnership in a shared commitment to uphold human dignity and serve the common good.
