OnĀ  October 24, 2024, the LL.M./J.S.D. Program in Intercultural Human Rights, in collaboration with PBS, The Smile Trust, The John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy, the Student Bar Association, the Black Law Student Association, the Caribbean Law Student Association, and the Anti-Human Trafficking Law Society, hosted an engaging evening featuring the screening of the documentary ā€œRazing Liberty Square,ā€ directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Katja Esson.

The event commenced with a welcome address from Professor Jeffrey Veitch, Associate Dean of Administration, followed by opening remarks from Professor Dr. Roza Pati. The documentary explores critical contemporary issues such as climate change, gentrification, and the challenges faced by low-income housing communities. It focuses on Liberty City, Miamiā€”once home to one of the oldest segregated public housing projects in the United Statesā€”now contending with rising sea levels and a burgeoning real estate market that threatens its historical character.

Following the screening, Professor Robin M. Peguero moderated a panel discussion featuring the filmmaker Katja Esson, Valencia Gunder, Co-Director of The Smile Trust, and Rev. Dr. Alfred Cioffi, Director of Bioethics at St. Thomas University. The panelists shared insights from their experiences in producing the documentary and engaged in an in-depth discussion about the themes presented in ā€œRazing Liberty Square.ā€ The evening concluded with a reception, providing attendees with an opportunity to network and further discuss the pressing issues highlighted throughout the event.
