Katja Esson

Academy Award Nominated Filmmaker 

Academy Award nominated filmmaker based in Miami, blending documentary and narrative genres. Born and raised in Germany, Esson brings a unique European sensibility to her distinctly American subjects.

Her documentary short “Ferry Tales” received an Academy Award nomination in 2004 for Best Documentary Short and premiered on HBO. Esson is currently in production with “Cantineros De Cuba,” a film reflecting on the story of Cuba, a country undergoing its greatest transformation since 1959. She also created, wrote, and directed two 5-part series for ARTE: “Backroads USA” (2013) and “American Rivers” (2016).

In 2011, she released “Poetry of Resilience,” a documentary about six international poets who individually survived various political conflicts. This documentary had its world premiere at the Oscar-qualifying festival DocuWeeks in L.A. In the same year, she also released “Skydancer”, a film that explores the Mohawk tradition of ironworking, made possible by a 2008 Jerome Foundation Grant. The film premiered at the Margaret Mead Film Festival, screened at the Smithsonian, has gathered many international awards and aired on PBS and Arte among other broadcasters.

n 2009, Esson directed an episode for the Emmy-award winning mini-series “We Are New York.”

“Hole in the Sky: The Scars of 9/11” premiered at Sunny Side of the Doc and received the 2006 Gold Award at the World Media Festival.

In 2004, Esson founded her own production company, Penelope Pictures.
