About the Namesake

Michele Gillen

Michele Gillen was a celebrated investigative journalist and South Florida television news anchor whose distinguished career earned her 39 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Regional Emmy Awards, the Columbia-DuPont Silver Baton, the Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Reporting, and three Green Eyeshade Awards, among many other honors. She was widely known for her investigation Invisible Chains, an exposé on human trafficking and modern-day slavery in the United States and around the world. In cooperation with St. Thomas University and Professor Dr. Roza Pati, Ms. Gillen helped organize a first-of-its-kind international conference in South Florida to combat human trafficking, held at St. Thomas University College of Law in 2004. This partnership continued for many years.
Ms. Gillen also produced the award-winning short documentary Trapped: Lessons from the Trenches, which featured Kyla Massey’s story. The film received a local Emmy Award in 2017 in the category of Societal Concerns – News and exposed the deeply human dimensions of trafficking, including its connections to mental illness, drug addiction, foster care, and suicide. Trapped also illuminated pathways toward hope and featured the John J. Brunetti Human Trafficking Academy. Ms. Gillen passed away in June 2021 and is remembered for her fearless investigative journalism, passion for truth, and unwavering advocacy for the vulnerable and exploited.

Kyla Massey

Kyla Massey was a survivor of human trafficking in Florida who courageously used her voice and lived experience to help others. She bravely shared her story with the world, emphasizing that even if circumstances did not change for her personally, she wanted her voice to serve others above all else. Ms. Massey was a devoted mother of two daughters and a son whom she loved deeply. She passed away in July 2020 at the age of 30. Her voice, story, and legacy continue to educate, inspire, and strengthen efforts to combat human trafficking.
