Professor Michael Vastine joined the faculty of St. Thomas University College of Law in 2004, where he is a tenured professor of law and Director of the Immigration Clinic. A frequent conference speaker and author, he is also a leader of the immigration bar, with extensive service within the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). From 2011-20, he was elected to serve on the AILA South Florida Chapter Board of Directors, including a term as Chair of the Chapter. Professor Vastine’s AILA national-level service includes multiple terms on the Federal Litigation Section Steering Committee, Annual Conference Planning Committee, and Amicus Curiae Committee. His impact litigation principally relates to immigration and crimes, including the lead case at the Florida Supreme Court establishing the constitutional rights of immigrant defendants to effective representation by their criminal counsel, and multiple cases at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit delineating the immigration consequences of Florida convictions involving controlled substances. Additionally, he has represented AILA and other community-based organizations, as amicus curiae counsel, in forums ranging from the Board of Immigration Appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court, in matters including the constitutional limits of indefinite detention of immigrants, the due process rights of the physically deported, and the immigration consequences of state crimes. In 2013, Professor Vastine received the AILA (National) Elmer Fried Award for Excellence in Teaching.
All human beings are defined by their intrinsic dignity — a reflection of God’s image in humanity. Survivors of human trafficking are not defined by the challenges and the adversity they have endured, but by the strength and determination with which they rebuild their lives. Each journey is deeply personal, shaped by resilience, healing, and the pursuit of justice. While the world often focuses on intervention and immediate recovery, true justice requires long-term support, access to opportunities, and the recognition of survivors as key voices, as leaders in shaping the future of anti-trafficking law, policy and practice.
The 2025 Human Trafficking Academy is dedicated to exploring the realities of life during and beyond trafficking. Over the course of this immersion-style training, experts, advocates and survivor leaders will examine the dynamics of trafficking, the challenges that hinder long-term healing as well as the solutions that foster empowerment. Through a survivor-centered, survivor-led and multidisciplinary approach, the Academy will focus on legal protections, economic justice, trauma-informed care and leadership development, ensuring that survivors’ dignity and agency remain at the heart of every effort in search of a solution to this societal problem.
Survivors are shaping policies, mentoring others, building businesses, creating art, contributing to literature and leading efforts to create lasting change in society. Their authentic voices and their wisdom provide not only lived expertise, but also a vision for a world where self-care and healing are fully supported, and where opportunities for human flourishing are truly accessible to all. However, meaningful participation in this work requires strong mental and emotional resilience as well as substantial governmental and social support while recognizing the challenges survivors face in stepping into these roles.
Held at St. Thomas University College of Law, the Survivors Academy welcomes legal professionals, law enforcement, social service providers, healthcare practitioners, policymakers, journalists, faith-based organizations, survivor leaders, academics, students and all people of good will, committed to survivor empowerment.
We invite you to share this week with us, as we strive to shine a light onto the intrinsic value of every human being, to shift the focus beyond survival, toward strength, self-determination, and toward a future where every survivor has the opportunity to reclaim their life, regain full control and reach their potential without limits.
