Founder/Co-Director of the Smile Trust Inc., Executive Director of The Black Collective, and  Director of  The Freedom Lab

Valencia Gunder, known as the “Modern Day Fannie Lou Hamer,” is a dynamic community leader from Miami. She is the Founder/Co-Director of the Smile Trust Inc., Executive Director of The Black Collective, and Director of The Freedom Lab, working to positively impact communities across Florida.

Valencia leads climate awareness discussions on issues like sea level rise, climate gentrification, emergency preparedness, food safety and housing, serving on the Steering Committee for Greater Miami’s 100 Resilient Cities. She founded the Community Emergency Operations Center, aiding over 23,000 residents after Hurricane Irma, and expanded her efforts to the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian.

After losing her goddaughter to gun violence, Valencia created the “LIFT” toolkit to combat violence in Miami, earning the Soros Justice Fellowship. As a returning citizen, she played a pivotal role in passing Amendment 4, restoring voting rights to 1.4 million Floridians, and advocates for formerly incarcerated Black women in Florida. Valencia remains dedicated to ensuring fair treatment for her community.
